KNOW THE FACTS - BEFORE YOU BORROW MONEY (2003-2005)
In 2003, the Office of the State Bank Commissioner collaborated with Delaware's Attorney General's Office on a consumer education campaign with a message to "Know the Facts - Before you Borrow Money". Roadside billboards, transit advertising and informational brochures encouraged Delaware residents to "do their homework" -- ask questions and research available options before signing any documents. This consumer education campaign was wholly funded by the provisions of a settlement with a major mortgage lender about claims of unfair and misleading practices. Brochures produced by the campaign focused on predatory lending issues, as well as payday lending, car title lending, high cost mortgages and check cashing fees. Representatives of the Office of the State Bank Commissioner and the Attorney General's Office made public presentations on TV, radio and at community meetings throughout Delaware.
